Title
An ordinance amending Chapter 20 (Boards, Commissions, and Committees), Article V (Advisory Boards, Commissions, and Committees), by revising Division 8 (Youth Advisory Board), for the purpose of adding two additional Regular Member positions to the Mesquite Youth Advisory Board for a total of eleven Regular Member positions, making certain other related additions or deletions, and authorizing transitional provisions for new board member terms.
Body
The original Youth Services Advisory Committee was established in 1992 to provide guidance and recommendations on youth programs and initiatives within the City of Mesquite. Over time, the committee became inactive and dissolved. With new evolving needs of the City's youth, there is an opportunity to reestablish this board with a renewed focus and structure.
The reestablished Mesquite Youth Advisory Board will serve as a vital connection between the City Council, City staff, and Mesquite’s youth ensuring that young residents have a voice in civic engagement and community programming. This board will:
• Serve as a liaison to the City Council and make recommendations regarding Mesquite Youth Council initiatives.
• Provide recommendations to the City Council on youth-focused programs and policies.
• Monitor and evaluate City programming related to youth and suggest enhancements.
• Act as a forum for exchanging information related to current and future Mesquite Youth Council programs.
• Update the City Council on the status of Mesquite Youth Council initiatives as needed.
On March 3, 2025, City Council voted to amend Chapter 20 re-establishing the Youth Advisory Board with nine board member positions.
On July 21, 2025, City Council voted and appointed eight individuals to the Board. Additionally, the City Council recommended to add two more board member positions for a new total of eleven Regular Member positions.
The approval of this ordinance amendment will add two “Any Resident of the City” board member positions to the Youth Advisory Board.
