Title
Approve request to receive donated public art for the Mesquite Main Library located at 300 West Grubb Drive.
Body
Currently, there is a sculpture in front of the Mesquite Public Library entitled “Lottiepop Pinwheel”. It was placed as part of the City’s Art Around Town Project, which allows temporary artwork to be placed around the city on a two-year contract. At the end of the contract, artwork is removed and returned to the artist. The artwork at the Library is scheduled to be removed next month.
The Friends of the Mesquite Public Library, with the support of Library staff, would like to purchase the artwork for the City. This would allow the artwork to remain permanently. Mesquite Arts Center staff will annually inspect the artwork and will orchestrate any maintenance or repairs through appropriate City departments.
Per City of Mesquite Ordinance No. 3703 - Public Art Policy, Section VII, Part F - Donations and Loans of Artwork, when a donation is proposed for placement with any City agency or department, the Public Art Committee and the Mesquite Arts Council Board of Directors shall review the proposal. City Council has the final decision per the recommendation by Arts Council Board of Directors based on review of Public Art Committee’s acceptance or non-acceptance of artwork.
The Public Art Committee voted on May 31, 2017, via email to accept the requested proposal. The Mesquite Arts Council Board of Directors voted on June 5, 2017, via email to recommend acceptance of donated artwork to the City Council.
