This purchase is for the supply of fire protective bunker gear (jackets and pants) for 11 newly hired members of the Mesquite Fire Department (MFD). This purchase ensures operations-assigned firefighters are issued two sets of gear, as indicated by Mesquite Fire Department’s standard operating procedures and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1851 standard.  The additional set allows for the immediate cleaning of one set after exposure to any suspected carcinogens, while allowing the firefighter to utilize the second set to continue to respond to emergencies for the remainder of their assigned shift.

The contract for purchase of fire protective clothing was bid in 2021 and was awarded to the low bidder, Municipal Emergency Services, Inc.  However, that supplier is now unable to fulfill the terms of the agreement due to supply chain issues.  Staff recommends utilization of BuyBoard National Purchasing Cooperative, Contract No.603-20, to ensure a sufficient quantity of protective clothing can be purchased and maintained for newly hired firefighters.

Financial Implications

The purchase of fire protective clothing was approved in the department’s Operating Budget.
