An ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the City Code regarding the location of school zones by adding a school zone for Florence Elementary School along Ashwood Drive between Oates Drive and Whitson Way.
Body
The purpose of a school zone is to allow children to safely cross a street at a marked crossing. Staff proposes adding a new school zone along Ashwood Drive between Oates Drive and Whitson Way to accommodate the new layout of Florence Elementary School.
Mr. James Huckaby, Director of Safety and Risk Management, Mesquite Independent School District (MISD), has initiated a request for a new school zone on Ashwood Drive, due to a change in moving the entry/exit driveways from Gleneagle Drive to Ashwood Drive, for Florence Elementary School. Staff has reviewed the new driveway location with MISD staff and concurs with the request for installation of a new school zone on Ashwood Drive between Oates Drive and Whitson Way.
Financial Implications
Funding for signs and markings for the new school zone is included in the Traffic Engineering’s operations budget.
Recommendations/desired action
Staff recommends approval of the ordinance.
