Title

Consider an ordinance determining the population of the City of Mesquite to be 143,060 as of October 1, 2017.

 

Body

This ordinance will designate the official population of the City of Mesquite, Texas, to be 143,060 as of October 1, 2017.  The population figure is provided annually by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and is necessary to determine the ratio of police officers to population as required by Article III, Section 24(a) of the Mesquite City Charter.

 

Additional Information:

 

1.                     US Census (January 1, 2010):  139,824.

2.                     NCTCOG Estimate (January 1, 2017):  143,060.

3.                     Number of sworn police officers of all classifications required by City Charter:  215.

4.                     Number of sworn police officers of all classifications authorized in the fiscal year 2017-18 budget is 234, which is 19 more than the Charter requires.

5.                     Future population growth needed before police officer Charter provision requires an additional authorized police officer position:  12,943.

Staff recommends approval of the ordinance.
