The Fire Department’s current Scott Aviation firefighting breathing system is reaching the end of its serviceable life. An evaluation of five different Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) breathing air systems was commissioned during calendar year 2017 to determine the best replacement system for the Department. The Committee charged with conducting the evaluation has recommended the MSA Safety G1 as the best option to meet the Department’s future needs. The new system meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards 1981 & 1982 (2013 edition), and incorporates a new accountability system to help incident commanders keep track of on-scene firefighters, as well as monitoring their breathing air status.
Financial Implications
This upgrade is included in the 2017-18 budget. The purchase includes enough SCBAs for all current equipment riding positions, plus additional spares as needed for repairs, special programs and potential regional deployments. A portion of the balance of the budgeted amount will be used to purchase a laptop to operate the MSA accountability software.
