Title

Consider scheduling a special City Council meeting to canvass the returns for the May 5, 2018, General Election and Special Charter Amendment Election.

Body

Section 67.003 of the Texas Election Code requires that the canvass of an election be conducted not later than the 11th day after election day [Wednesday, May 16] and not earlier than the later of: (1) the third day after election day [Tuesday, May 8], (2) the date on which the early voting ballot board has verified and counted all provisional ballots [Monday, May 14] or (3) the date of which all timely received ballots cast from addresses outside of the United States are counted [Monday, May 14].

This agenda item will allow the City Council to call a special City Council meeting for Tuesday, May 15, 2018, to canvass the returns of the May 5, 2018, General Election and Special Charter Amendment Election. By holding the special meeting on May 15, 2018, it will allow the Dallas County Elections Department sufficient time to complete its review of any provisional ballots and ballots received from military personnel or other citizens currently outside of the United States and produce election reports needed to canvass the election.

Staff recommends the City Council call a special meeting to canvass the results of the May 5, 2018, General Election and Special Charter Amendment Election on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.
