Title

An ordinance amending Chapter 13 of the City Code regarding pole signs, nonconforming signs, monument signs, number of signs, electronic message centers and certain administrative requirements.

(This item was postponed at the May 21, 2018, City Council meeting.)

Body

Several aspects of the Sign Code are proposed for amendment. The prohibition of pole signs in nonresidential zoning districts would be lifted and includes height, size, color, illumination and separation requirements for those signs. Requirements for bringing nonconforming signs into compliance would be limited to coincide with building demolition. Modifications pertaining to certain types of monument signs and electronic message centers related to changes in the pole sign and nonconforming sign requirements are proposed. Staff is recommending certain administrative modifications related to sign variances and updating the department name.

The proposed amendments are intended to create more flexibility for Mesquite businesses to advertise and allow more opportunities to productively reuse existing buildings.

Recommended/Desired Action

Staff recommends approval of the proposed ordinance
