The City of Mesquite has an expansive fiber optic network that connects all of its major buildings across the city. The main fiber network ring was constructed 10 years ago with the connected locations determined by the project budget and input from the various departments that could utilize the advanced services.

The Utilities Division currently utilizes a specialized AT&T circuit to monitor water levels at the Long Branch Lift Station. The current charge for the AT&T circuit is $2,432.00 per month. This circuit can be replaced with a city-owned fiber optic link with a cost break-even point by 26 months.

The life expectancy of the fiber optic network is at least 25 years. The remaining funds would be applied to the future purchase of network equipment and related parts for this location.

Financial Implications

This project is funded in the Water and Sewer Fund.

Recommended/Desired Action

Staff recommends award to Future Telecom.
