An ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the City Code adding new school zones for Rutherford Elementary School, effective on and after September 10, 2018.
Body
The purpose of a school zone is to allow children to safely cross a street at a marked crossing. Staff proposes adding a new school zone along Rutherford Drive between Sierra Drive and Covington Drive to accommodate the new layout of Rutherford Elementary School.
Mr. James Huckaby, Director of Safety and Risk Management, Mesquite Independent School District (MISD), has initiated a request for a new school zone on Rutherford Drive, due to moving the entry/exit driveways for Rutherford Elementary School from Sierra Drive to Rutherford Drive. Staff has reviewed the new driveway location with MISD staff and concurs with the request for installation of a new school zone on Rutherford Drive between Sierra Drive and Covington Drive.
Financial Implications
Funding for signs and markings for the new school zone is included in the Traffic Engineering’s operations budget.
Recommendations/desired action
Staff recommends approval of the ordinance.
