Title

Authorize the City Manager to finalize and execute an agreement with the County of Dallas to permit the City of Mesquite to issue State of Texas motor vehicle registration renewals for City owned vehicles.

Body

The City of Mesquite has approximately 750 vehicles, requiring State of Texas registration renewals per year. The current registration renewal process causes delays in receiving registration stickers and requires staff to make several trips per week to the Dallas County Tax office. Requesting renewals on-line causes delays in receiving the renewals for up to two weeks. In response to the considerable inconvenience in the registration renewal process, the County of Dallas has developed a Motor Vehicle License Program for government entities to process and issue registration renewals in-house. Staff feels that the City would benefit from participating in this program, saving considerable time and expense.

The attached agreement is part of the process for the City of Mesquite to become a Subcontractor for the County of Dallas.

Financial Implications

The City would be required to furnish a bond payable to the Dallas County Tax Assessor-Collector in the amount of $15,000.00. Cost to the City for this bond is $150.00. There will be a long-term positive financial impact to the City, for time and expense saved in streamlining the process for the City and the savings of on-line convenience fees currently being assessed.

Recommended/Desired Action

Staff recommends approval of the agreement.
