This project will reconstruct Gus Thomasson Road from US Highway 80 to Town East Boulevard. Infrastructure improvements include replacing aging water, sanitary sewer, and upgrading the drainage infrastructure through the corridor. The pavement section for Gus Thomasson will be substantially increased to a 12-inch pavement section in the high traffic areas from US Highway 80 to Towne Centre Drive and from North Mesquite Drive to Town East Boulevard. The remaining section will be increased to a 10-inch pavement section from Towne Centre Drive to North Mesquite Drive. Hardscaping and landscaping amenities have been integrated into the project that include monuments for the astronaut streets, stamped concrete, river cobble, decomposed granite, and trees and shrubs.

The Gus Thomasson Road Reconstruction project (Base Bid, Additive/Alternate 1, and Additive Alternate 4) was presented at a public meeting held on June 30, 2016. At that time, the public was provided a survey pertaining to keeping the astronaut streets closed, adding landscaped screening, adjusting the roadway alignment, adding a hike and bike trail and including neighborhood identity elements. The input received from the public hearing and the results from the survey were incorporated into the design scope of the project. The City Council approved an engineering contract on December 5, 2016, with Binkley & Barfield, Inc., for the design of this project.
