Title
An ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the City Code deleting certain school zones for Florence Elementary School, Hanby Elementary School and Seabourn Elementary School, effective on and after January 29, 2019.
Body
During the past year, the Mesquite Independent School District (MISD) has reconstructed the campuses at Florence, Hanby and Seabourn Elementary Schools. The reconstruction of these campuses and their new layout has changed the orientation of the respective schools to face different streets in the area.
The purpose of a school zone is to allow children to safely cross a street at a marked crossing. The school zones, which were in place along the former streets for these three Elementary Schools, are no longer needed due to no active pedestrian crossings.
Staff proposes deleting certain school zones for Florence Elementary School, Hanby Elementary School and Seabourn Elementary School, due to change in orientation and lay out of these schools to face different streets in the area.
Mr. James Gadsden, Manager of Risk Management and Operations, Mesquite Independent School District (MISD), has provided concurrence to the proposed deletion of the school zones, due to moving the entry/exit driveways for respective schools.
Financial Implications
Funding for removing the signs and markings for the school zones that are no longer is use, is included in the Traffic Engineering’s operations budget.
Recommendations/desired action
Staff recommends approval of the ordinance.
