To continue the enhancement of transportation services throughout the City, the Traffic Engineering Division budgeted to upgrade existing loop vehicle detection systems at traffic signals to video detection systems. Traffic signal video detection systems have lower maintenance costs than traditional wire loop detection systems that are embedded in the pavement. In addition, video detection systems also provide additional benefits by allowing real-time viewing of traffic conditions at intersections at the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and by the Police Department. Funding for the annual project is provided through the Mesquite Quality of Life Corporation. Traffic Engineering, through an interlocal-cooperative purchasing agreement with the City of Richardson, received a quote from ITS PLUS, Inc., for the purchase of equipment to upgrade existing traffic signals to video detection.
