Through inspection and evaluation of the City's wastewater collection system, staff identified approximately 3,100 feet of large diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) sanitary sewer running along South Mesquite Creek through Bruton Park and Hodges Park that is deteriorating and needs to be rehabilitated. Design of this project has been performed by Huitt-Zollars, Inc., and will utilize a Cured-In-Place-Pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation method to line the inside of the existing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) sanitary sewer trunk mains. Deterioration and corrosion of these mains is caused by a complex process where sulfur in the waste stream effluent is converted by bacteria into sulfide and then into sulfuric acid. Over time the sulfuric acid dissolves portions of the RCP that is above the waste flow. Therefore, the pipe wall thins and may reach the point where it can no longer support the soil load above the pipe, leading to a collapse of the pipeline with potentially severe environmental and fiscal consequences. The City is no longer allowing or using RCP for large sanitary sewer mains.

This project will also replace a sewer line that crosses Gross Road, just west of Peachtree Road. The sewer main was constructed in such a way that does not allow for rehabilitation by the CIPP method and instead will require open cut and complete replacement of the main.
