As part of the Fiscal Year 2020-2021 Budget, the City Council approved hiring additional Parks Staff to transition the landscape maintenance in specific areas of the City from contractor-provided services to an in-house service. To meet the demands of this maintenance, the use of specialized equipment is required. Typically, several different pieces of equipment are used to complete the work. However, a tractor with different mowing attachments is available that would provide versatility, improve efficiency and is more cost effective than purchasing different styles of mowers. The Ventrac tractor and attachments are ideal for mowing varied terrain, especially areas that are too wet to mow with traditional mowers.
The Department currently has one Ventrac machine that has proven to be a valuable piece of equipment. The three additional Ventracs will have two different styles of mowing deck attachments to maintain areas with varying conditions, grades and slopes. One deck can cut grass eight feet high down to a height of 3.5 inches while the other mowing deck is considered a finish deck and capable of cutting as low as two inches. Also included in the equipment package is a canopy cover and suspension seat. To provide additional flexibility, an additional mowing deck and canopy are being purchased for the existing machine.
